HEARTBREAK HOTEL

Recently I was on tour in Adelaide, Australia when a friend and band mate, Alberto Pancotti, invited me to see a show called 'Heartbreak Hotel' featuring a “Female" artist - Her name - Rachel Vidoni. I agreed to join him not knowing what to really expect, being a tribute artist myself, but I was in and curious to see the show.

To be honest, I was expecting to see a female in a tight black leather outfit or jumpsuit sporting a black Pompadour wig with sideburns, walking out on stage to the sounds of 2001, and shake, rattle and roll, singing in that familiar voice and style  - we all know well.

So there I was, ready to witness once again another Elvis impersonator. All of sudden the house lights drop, the music starts and a brightly lit screen shows a silhouette of a beautiful female - with long hair! Well this isn’t what I was expecting..where is the Pompadour?? Where is the jumpsuit??

And then all at once she began to sing. She didn’t sound like Elvis. She wasn’t even trying to sound like Elvis. What is this -I thought.

Her voice was rich, strong and beautiful like a Heavenly Angel!

I was in disbelief as the show moved forward covering hit after hit of the King!!

In between each song, she told a short story that led into the next tune and the show flowed flawlessly as it told the story of Elvis through song.

I realized right away I was not at an 'impersonator' show at all I was experiencing, right before my eyes, a true tribute to Elvis Presley - it was so refreshing to witness - at last someone paying tribute to Elvis Presley in its purest form, being themselves without comparison or judgement!

This show is a MUST SEE for anyone who loves the music of Elvis Presley. It is heartfelt throughout and a brilliant breath of fresh air to the scene - Rachel Vidoni is definitely not just another “Elvis impersonator".

I’ve been an Elvis fan since I was a child, and I have seen many Elvis acts over the years - including myself! If you are an Elvis fan or just looking for great entertainment believe me when I say this is a MUST SEE SHOW.

Bill Cherry, who marvellously performs as Elvis separates the cream of the crop from all those who attempt to pay homage to the King.

Having grown up listening to the King, Elvis was Bill’s first inspiration. As a child, Bill would avidly watch all of Elvis’s movies and listen to his records. And when he wasn’t listening to Elvis, or the other greats of the time—like the Beatles or Johnny Cash—Bill was honing his own vocal skills.

Singing along with his father, Bill’s home grown musical talent has now taken him far and wide.

Paying homage to the king since 1989, Bill is absolutely one of the best Elvis tribute artists in the business. For Bill it’s not enough to sing, act and dance like the King, he even drives the same car as him—a Stutz Blackhawk (one of which can be seen at Graceland). His career has led him to perform with many of the same bands who backed Elvis, like the Jordaniers, the Sweet Inspirations, DJ Fontana, and members of J. D. Sumner and the Stamps Quartet.

He has received many awards and accolades for his spot-on renditions. Prior to winning in Memphis, Bill took first place at the 2009 Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Preliminaries in Tupelo, Mississippi. This back-to-back win proved historic as it was the first time any Elvis Tribute Artist won the title of Ultimate at both the birthplace and the hometown of Elvis Presley in the same year.

He’s been honored by Time Magazine, as one of the top Elvis Tribute artist, and has also won The Heart of the King award in Las Vegas at the Hilton where Elvis performed for several years. While Bill never met the King, he’s doing fabulous work of maintaining his legacy, and impressing audiences at every one of his performances.
